American Chemical Society Award

By Evie

I won the Portland Contest from the American Chemical Society where you would draw a picture and write a haiku about it. My picture had three wind turbines with different types of blades. I used watercolor paints and painted them blue, red, green, and yellow. Then I wrote a haiku. It had to have 5 syllables, 7 syllables, then 5 five syllables. My poem was called “The Breeze.” I am really happy about this contest. I have never won a contest before.

Evie was selected as a National winner in the Air-The Sky’s the Limit illustrated Haiku contest. To view Evie’s winning entry

Mountain Hiking Story

By Jonathan F.

I walk on and up the mountain
On packed dirt like cement.
Trees hover over me,
And the loud crash of waterfalls surrounding the air with mist,
I see the birds chirping and flying
Through the air,
I hear the fish jump and splash,
And the deer crashing through the
Crunchy leaves.
I look at the starry night,
And the moon!
Then I say, “Oh moon, what is your story?”

Jonathon won second place in the National Poetry AssociationContest. Great Job Jonathan!

Love is…

By Malia

Red is love,

Up above,

In the sky so high.

Sometimes it’s hard to see love,

But I know it’s there.

Love is strong like a song,

That my mom sings to me.

It is in the hugs that my dad gives me,

When he misses me.

Love is in the cookies that my brothers share with me.

Love is my grandpa picking me up from school.

Love is a fiery warmness in my heart.

It’s hard to see,

But I know it’s there.

Four Students Take First Place in Robotics Tournament

Jarrett, Stephen , Jacob and Philip are part of the Got Gripper Lego Robotics team that won first place in the regional First Lego League tournament on 13 December. Former Cheetahs Andrew and Ben and Brush College student Connor are the other members of the team, and they are coached by Greg Smith, Philip's father and computer teacher at WSHS. By placing first, the team automatically advances to the state tournament on 18 January in Hillsboro. This is their third year together and second year going to state.
There are four parts to the competition. First, the team programs the robot to complete as many tasks as possible in 2 ½ minutes. They have three tries to score as many points as possible. On their third run, Got Gripper scored 150 points, the high score on the table, beating the next team by 39 points. Second is the technical presentation during which the team explains how they built and programmed the robot. Third is a teamwork challenge during which the team must work together to solve a new problem. Finally is the project presentation. This year's theme was Climate Connections, so all the projects addressed a climate problem in the area. The team developed innovative solutions to the problem and presented them to the judges. The team studied how greenhouse gases affect bull trout and Douglas fir beetles in Oregon then suggested two solutions using pico plankton, a microscopic organism from the ocean that could clean the air through photosynthesis. They have won first place in the Young team division!
